Things are done very differently here
August 24, 2012
Now that I've finally stopped asking myself why I'm here, what have I done to deserve this opportunity, and just accepted that I'm part of the RSC Amateur Ensemble, we arrive at the first week of rehearsals.
So, after 'boot camp', which gave us all a chance to bond, to learn new skills (especially from the charming Michael Corbidge!), and pretend to punch and strangle one another, I had no idea what rehearsals were going to be like.
Things are done very differently here from what I'm used to, and I do find myself asking 'What country friends is this?'… Although different, when I think back just a few short weeks, the developments that I think I've already made, the steps I've taken, are HUGE! And this is just the beginning. I cannot express enough how important the warm-ups have been, something which anyone who's worked with me will tell you, I hated with a passion - until now.
The most fascinating thing I've learned thus far is the massive difference that can be made to the human voice through the simple process of 'anchoring'… My God! It's like there's an amplifier within your body and very little effort yields such results it has to be heard to be believed. Okay, that sounds a little mad, but it is true.
We are residing for the next few weeks in the glamourous surroundings of Rehearsal Room 1 … Isn't it lovely?
Not what you first expect. I don't know what I did expect… and I know it's ridiculous, but I'm still holding on to the hope that somewhere I'm standing on the same bit of floor David Tennant has! And I'm crossing my fingers to bump into Anita Dobson in the corridor…
