Plunging into Pericles

The Bard's Bawd

September 17, 2012

A lot seems to have happened since my last blog and the performance dates are edging ever closer.

I'm playing Bawd, the brothel madam. I'm not sure if I should be flattered or flattened but a lot of friends and family have said that it's perfect casting.

The costume fitting for Bawd was hilarious. Without giving too much away, the outfit is completely mad, fab, and dangerous to know. I can imagine my nephew and niece sinking into their seats with embarrassment when they see me on stage.

The RSC production train is now going up the gears and quickening its pace.

One evening, we were shown the model box of the Pericles' set. Visually, it is stunning and will be a wonderful space within which to act.

On a slightly worrying note, I'm not sure if it should be cause for concern that we have been asked for a volunteer from the cast to be the health and safety representative!

On another evening, we were introduced to the RSC Marketing team who have produced beautiful and striking promotional material.

It is quite something to see in print that the RSC considers Pericles as the fourth play in the shipwreck season. With all the work and talent applied to the project, we certainly won't end up on the rocks.

Another fascinating evening was a humorous and highly informative presentation by Michael Dobson of the Shakespeare Institute on Pericles. I didn't realise that Pericles was the blockbuster play of its day and only fell out of favour during the 17th Century.
