Plunging into Pericles

Learner driver

September 10, 2012

Pericles scriptSo, here I am. Holding the script for Pericles in an RSC rehearsal room. Let me just pinch myself and repeat that, particularly for my work colleagues who initially thought I had got an audition with the RAC.

On second thoughts, there might be an analogy forming here. For a start, this process is going to take me and 29 other amateur actors on a personal journey as we get to grips with the skills needed to get this show 'on the road'.

At the steering wheel of this dramatic juggernaut the professional drivers (aka directors James and Jamie) will be acting as a theatrical sat nav , guiding us through the rehearsal process and maybe taking some alternative routes along the way, till we reach our final destination: The Courtyard Theatre.

Let's face it, to make it into the final cast for this unique project is BRILLIANT. Even before rehearsals began, the 'boot camp' sessions have given me loads of new ideas to use in my own work as a drama teacher.

It's the fact that we have been 'RSC endorsed' as actors that makes it so fantastic, particularly in light of the fact that this is not our day job.

I've seen the plays, I've read the Complete Works and occasionally bought an ill fitting T shirt. To perform at the RSC for an amateur actor is Nirvana, Shangri -La and for those of you of a football disposition it's the 'theatre of dreams'. A Conference player on loan to a Premiership side.

So, seat belt on and I'm ready for the journey of a lifetime...

Insure Learner Driver

Chris Clarke writes a superb blog item here and it made me laugh. As the blog writer for the Insure Learner Driver web site I receive google alerts for web items about learner drivers and this popped up. The thing which grabbed me was the Premiership/Conference analogy (I am a football lover) and I fully grasped the meaning of being at the RSC as an amateur actor. Best of luck and best wishes. Jack.
