Plunging into Pericles

Getting started

August 24, 2012

I'd been excited to be rehearsing for Pericles since I got the go in April. From that point all other things, such as exams and holidays, were just passing time as I was waiting for this fantastic opportunity; the ability to work with the RSC and perform on one of their world famous stages.

Having had three weekends worth of rehearsals to date, I always found myself with such enthusiasm for the 'artist development' workshops that we had been doing and a longing to be able to do these workshops and rehearsal techniques every day. I could already feel myself improving and becoming more comfortable with exercises we were being shown and the different approaches to characterisation and delivery.

Despite everything we've done so far being quite alien to what I've done before, I'm really keen to get started, and now, finally, we can.

Tonight I moved to Stratford-upon-Avon in order to be able to get to rehearsals and ultimately, the performances easily.

My previous trips to Stratford-upon-Avon had only been on school trips or with friends to see RSC productions, so I'd never really gotten a feel for the town. Being able to walk around during the day and really soak up the atmosphere is amazing and, so far, the weather's held up and the riverside and high street have been awash with people, adding to the idyllic feel and picturesque nature of the town.

Our first rehearsal is tomorrow and from there on out it's intensive. Rehearsals every evening from 7-10pm (I can hear the RSC season actors laughing already!) until we're told otherwise. Despite what looks like a gruelling schedule for amateur actors who all have day jobs and lives outside of the production, I completely relish the challenge and can't wait to begin.

My only question is: what do I do with myself during the day?
