While out walking in Kent in the late summer, we walked past a number of buildings, churches, and houses that would have been there before and since the creation of the King James Bible.

I remember having a discussion with Patrick Marber as to whether there was, or was not, a comma in the middle of a particular short line in Dealer's Choice.

Last summer I visited the 2011 incarnation of the Serpentine Gallery's Pavilion. This is an annual commission for an architect or artist to create a temporary structure for the summer.

On the last weekend of November I made a much overdue trip to Berlin. I had not been for three years – since directing and choreographing Guys and Dolls in Germany in 2008 – that's another story!

I thought I should tell you a little bit more about the process. With these three plays to rehearse it's a bit like we're preparing a complex meal and juggling pots on the stove.

I remember the evening clearly. It was dark outside, that deep winter darkness hugged the building and I was sitting in the Reading Room in the Swan all warm and cosy, listening to the recordings that I had made that day. The place seemed quiet and intimate as if no one else was around but I knew that there were staff members, and visitors. That evening was an unveiling for all the patrons who had taken part in the Take Your Seat initiative.

There is story within a story here and I remember everything. That moment of contemplation, sitting in The Swan Room after seeing 'Love is My Sin' in the Swan Theatre. This was a performance of Shakespeare's sonnets by Michael Pennington (who has the greatest voice for recitation that I have ever heard) and Natasha Parry.

King George VI had Lionel Logue. We, at the RSC, have Michael Corbidge.
