Blog of Blogs

Struan Leslie

I am Struan Leslie the Director of Song of Songs – a staging of the 22nd book of the old testament The Song of Solomon.

This blog will be a bit like a journal of the production and the processes and collecting of bits and pieces. We are essentially devising a new piece of movement based theatre for The Swan here in Stratford upon Avon. – (though it would be nice if it had a life beyond it's three shows).

The movement ideas will all come from the text – the sensations more than literal explanations. The cast will be actors and not dancers though my work is very much about blurring those boundaries. The cast will be 4 women and 3 men.

Music and sound journey

As the piece is called Song of Songs I suppose I should be thinking about singing. However the text in all its richness seems song enough in some ways.

So here we are just off Russell Square at the side of the Hotel Russell, in the heart of London's Bloomsbury. This beautiful building is covered in 'tea with milk terracotta'.

It's now week two of rehearsals and so much for blogging a little everyday. Apologies but it was all I could do to eat and think.

Stained glass sheep!

So having said I wouldn't video in the church, I could not resist all these sheep – the image is so strong in the text as well as being a bit strange to our ears – the comparison of teeth to sheep! We will, I am sure, find a reason why that is so.

Simply put, this is about time. This man, Richard Streatfielde Greene, died in 1601. There is the use of language – English and not Latin in a church. The time is coming.

While out walking in Kent in the late summer, we walked past a number of buildings, churches, and houses that would have been there before and since the creation of the King James Bible.
