Adelaide Road

Aoife Mannix

Adelaide Road was an interactive project linking the RSC's work at the Roundhouse with its season at nearby Hampstead Theatre. With poet in residence Aoife Mannix, the residents of Adelaide Road, and the participants in the project, we have shared our explorations online.

On April 11th I ran a workshop for young people at IdeasTap, a fantastic creative network for emerging arts talent. I was incredibly impressed by the writing talent, imagination and enthusiasm of the young people I worked with. They came up with fabulous fantasy costumes to wear to our Adelaide Road wedding performance on May 14th as well as demonstrating a naturally romantic streak!

Here's another piece inspired by the experiences of the older people at the Charlie Ratchford centre. What has struck me most about working with them is their incredible gift for survival and the extraordinary lives they've led.

Still there's few things more inspiring than a room full of parents and small children enjoying discovering words together. Here's a poem I wrote about it.

Aoife's Blog: Charlie Ratchford Centre 3

Here's another piece inspired by the older people at the Charlie Ratchford Centre, just off Adelaide Road. It's a real eye opener talking to people who experienced the reality of being evacuated as children during the war. It's made me realise that we have a rather sentimental, almost nostalgic, attitude to 'the spirit of the Blitz'. As one survivor put it to me, it was very much the luck of the draw.

Workshop 7: Chalk Farm Library

Adelaide Road Participants

On March 14th, I led a creative writing workshop at Chalk Farm library on the theme of betrayal. Participants were asked to write questions such as if betrayal was a type of weather what would it be?. If anger was an animal what would it be? If revenge was a season of the year what would it be? They also wrote letters and wedding invitations for consideration for inclusion in the Adelaide Road show.

I ran a creative writing workshop at Chalk Farm Library on February 28th. Participants were asked what is your perfect bed made of? What does your perfect kitchen taste like? What does your perfect garden smell like? Who is your perfect neighbour? What can you hear on your perfect doorstep? What does home mean to you? They also wrote love letters between Joe and Mary, two of the characters in Adelaide Road.
