Playing Saturnius

June 28, 2013

I'm standing on the stairs that lead from stage left of the Swan to the first gallery. I'm staring at a single light-bulb, gaffer-taped to a wooden beam in front of me, waiting for it to illuminate. My heart is beating ten to the dozen, my fingers are flicking and twitching with excitement, and there's a knot in my stomach that is positively Gordian.

Understudies

In addition to your own character you are given another to learn just in case the actor playing that part, for whatever reason, is unable to go on.

Plantaganets, plots and pies

As props and costumes continue to be made I am increasingly falling over swords, axes, helmets, crowns, masks, severed heads, cloaks, light sabres and piles of velvet; I can't find any bowls because they're all being used for papier mache, paint or glue and every conversation is punctuated with cries of more diabolical things we can add to death scenes.

That teacher

June 17, 2013

I started at The Maynard in 2003. I remember it being that year because at the time Devon and its educational system were going through a rather strange 'Middle School' phase; before starting, my parents sent me to purgatory transitional school for four years where I took my SATS and learned to write joined up.

Back in Soho

A thin veil of cigarette smoke drifts in a seductive arc up stage left. Pink neon traces an illicit pattern across the lacquer of a double bass as I watch a single shimmering symbol coming to rest on the band platform above. Down here on stage, Harry McEntire is sitting in a dustbin, and Richard Goulding has a pair of ladies' pants on his head. It can only mean one thing.

BMH are returning to the Dell with The Comedy of Errors, and even though it is one of his shortest plays, we still have to reduce its running time to make it more effective for our open air audience.

Robin Soans, playing Polonius in Hamlet and Corin in As You Like It has over 40 years' theatrical experience. I ask him what he has learnt through accessing Shakespeare himself and how pathways for others can be created through performance.

No, we're putting on Henry V, not Julius Caesar! We continue rehearsals for the summer production, this time getting into individual elements of the fighting.
