Props advance the action

Who's this? Dominic Cooke is the director.

Context: A sense of place is important for both actor and audience. Props play an important part in creating the environment: they must be the right size, colour, texture and look the right age. They contribute not only to the visual experience for the audience but also help the actor's feeling of reality on stage.

This production chose to use simple pieces of furniture to tell the domestic story of the households: Lady Macbeth has a long bare table and, in her dressing-room, a large mirror to check her public appearance which is important to her; Lady Macduff's house is made to look more friendly by having a smaller table with a homely breadboard and toy soldiers on it.
