Witchcraft and Superstition

Why kill the man who's just promoted you?

Who's this? ? Richard Cordery plays Duncan.

Context: Lady Macbeth says that you can read Macbeth like a book and tell everything from his face. But Duncan is not very good at judging by appearances. He defends his misjudgement of the Thane of Cawdor saying: 'There's no art / To find the mind's construction in the face'. Then immediately he wrongly places his trust in Macbeth by giving him the same title as promotion. He seems blind to the prospect of further treachery.

Motive

Why kill the man who's just promoted you?
Duncan's death should be a surprise
