Director's cut

Who's this? Dominic Cooke is the director.

Context: Macbeth is one of Shakespeare's shortest plays. It usually runs at around an hour less than most others: this production was two hours long and to keep up the momentum ran without an interval.

Did you know? Macbeth had a 12-week rehearsal period. This included training workshops to enhance the actors' skills and experiences. The process for the actors was:

  • - read-through: reading someone else's part so as to prevent any anxiety over the 'performance';

  • - paraphrase: voicing the character's part in your own words to be sure of fully understanding and being in touch with the emotional implications - at the same time each scene or section was given a descriptive title;

  • - improvisation: using the titles to improvise an interpretation of the scene.

  • Find these titles in 'For Teachers'.
