Context:
Macbeth never finds peace or safety in the play. The first murder, of Duncan, was supposed to bring him power and status. It did; but without security. The second murder, of Banquo, was an attempt to find security and peace of mind. Removing Banquo should lessen the chance of discovery. Removing Fleance should secure Macbeth's hold on the kingdom, preventing the prophesied line of kings descended from Banquo. Fleance's escape undermines this and leaves Macbeth feeling it was a botched job. From then on he determines to annihilate all enemies and so orders the brutal attack on all Macduff's family. |
