Context:
Macduff has lost his children: Malcolm has lost his father.
In this production the actors felt there was a bond between
them: Macduff with all his integrity and love for Scotland
replaced Duncan as a father-figure for Malcolm. Macduff represents
the honourable side of the Scots warrior. He puts his country
before his family in adventuring to England to seek the rightful
heir; he returns to take on single combat with Macbeth in
a fight against evil; and he is given a mystical quality by
the ambiguity of his birth. |
