Ways into role

Who's this? Forbes Masson plays Horatio.

Context: Finding the physical life of a character is important as a focus for an actor; it can be a way into the psychology. In rehearsal each actor was asked to find a rhythm that connected with their character. What tempo suited the character - fast or slow? The actors would first clap the rhythm as they walked, then take the rhythm into their walk so that it became more internal, then move onto working with text using the internal rhythm to explore speech.

Did you know? The company movement work was done with Liz Ranken. Liz is a dancer, choreographer and long-time collaborator with Michael Boyd. She is also a founder member of DV8, the well-known physical theatre company. She worked regularly with the RSC Hamlet Company using movement techniques to inform character and help to define the nature of the world of the play and specifically the court.
