Ways into role

Using imagination to identify with a role

Who's this? Sian Thomas plays Gertrude.

Context: Actors also worked on finding the physical centre for a character - Gertrude and Ophelia chose their hearts. They explored movement led by that part of the body. They also explored the effect of locating private tension in a particular part of the body. Further character work was done through movement exercises exploring the relationships in Hamlet, experimenting with both obvious and abstract partnerships. These relationships were then expanded as the actors entered the court and formed classical portraits in a series of titled tableaux.
