Did you know: In the early 2nd Century, the writer Apuleius wrote The Golden Ass. This is a humorous erotic romance that tells the story of the young man, Lucius. As a result of his curiosity and desire for sex and magic, he is turned into a donkey. He is humiliated and only finally changed back into a man by the goddess Isis. The story is partly about sex and partly about the process of maturing. It had just been translated into English in 1566 and it seems likely that some of Shakespeare's details of the fairies' care of Bottom are drawn from this tale. |
