Context: During 1595-1598 there were three consecutive years of bad weather. Simon Forman, an astrologer known to have visited the Globe, records that summer felt like winter. People sat by fires to keep warm in July and it rained hard enough to cause floods. The failing harvests caused poverty and famine and an increase in vagrancy. Nowadays, the increased concern over global warming reminds us that despite our modern society we are still very dependent on the weather for successful food production. |
