The primary aim of RSC Learning is to enhance our audiences' enjoyment, understanding and ownership of the plays we perform and the theatre processes behind them. We have a particular commitment to those within the UK who teach or study Shakespeare.
Our annual programme of work is divided up into the following areas: Education Programme (those within formal education up to the age of 19 and their teachers); Higher Education; Collection, Archives and Exhibitions; Learning Resources; Young People, Families and Communities, and Professional Development: Theatre Education.
The learning experiences we provide include:
- practical, experiential workshops introducing our audiences to acting and staging process, voice, movement and other performance skills designed to bring Shakespeare's plays to life;
- INSET and outreach sessions for teachers introducing teachers to practical ways of working with Shakespeare's text and/or performance history;
- onstage demonstrations highlighting interpretive choices made by actors, directors, designers and other members of the creative team;
- seminars and lectures promoting detailed discussion of current plays with specialists;
- question and answer sessions facilitating conversations between our audiences and our artists;
- performance projects where a group of participants works with us over a period of time to create a performance;
- non-performance projects - as above, but without a performance at the end;
- masterclasses where someone with a high degree of expertise in a particular area leads a discussion-based or participatory session;
- conferences where we support the analysis of a particular play or way of working through a varied programme of activities.
