Young People's Shakespeare

YPS Week

Young People's Shakespeare (YPS) brings the power of seeing a live innovative production of Shakespeare to young people in schools around the country and at the RSC.

We adapt some of Shakespeare's best loved plays and edit them especially for younger audiences to give them the best possible introduction to Shakespeare.

This work forms part of our belief that young people get the most out of Shakespeare when they:

  • Do Shakespeare on their feet – explore the plays actively as actors do
  • See It Live – participate as members of a live audience
  • Start It Earlier – work on the plays from a younger age

Here's what young people said about our YPS productions in 2010:

'I didn't want to blink because I didn't want to miss anything.' Shivani, 11, watching Hamlet

'It was brilliant. I'd give it 10 out of 10. There's too many words to describe it. I want to watch more.' Joshua, 10, watching The Comedy of Errors

Our most recent YPS production was The Taming of the Shrew, directed by Tim Crouch.

The production was part of our YPS Week in October 2011.

Tim Crouch has also created two plays based on some of Shakespeare's unusual characters for younger audiences which will run from 19 - 23 October 2011 in the Swan Room (at the Swan Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon):
