Engaging young people with autism in Shakespeare
Wednesday 30 May 2012, 10am - 4pm
A Midsummer Night's Dream and The Tempest
Welcombe Hills Special School, Stratford-Upon-Avon

Ideal for: Any teacher or teaching assistant working with autistic children

This unique course is an introduction to a distinctive methodology, The Hunter Heartbeat Method, which uses Shakespeare to release the communicative blocks within children with autism. The course will teach games and exercises with full explanation of the Shakespearean themes behind them.

Two major themes underpin the work: the rhythm of the iambic pentameter, which creates a safe heartbeat sound within which the children feel safe to communicate and 'the mind's eye', which allows the children to explore imaginative worlds, which may otherwise be locked away.

The work encompasses all levels of autism including working with children who are non-verbal.

During the day, we will also play the games with a group of autistic children from Welcombe Hills Special School.

Kelly Hunter, creator of the practice, is an actress and a director. She has performed with the RSC regularly over the last 20 years.

Cost: £130 (£115 RSC Education members)
