The Tempest directed by Janice Honeyman.
RSC Associate Artist Antony Sher returns to the RSC to play Prospero in The Tempest. This new production, in association with South Africa's Baxter Theatre Centre, continues the legacy of the 2006 Complete Works Festival as the RSC develops creative partnerships with theatre companies from around the world. John Kani, who played Claudius in Baxter's 2006 sell out production of Hamlet in the Swan Theatre, will also return to Stratford to play Caliban.
Antony's many acclaimed performances for the RSC include Iago in Othello (2004), the title role in Macbeth (1999) and his seminal Richard III (1984). Antony, himself born in Cape Town, and the director Janice Honeyman first conceived the idea for this production eight years ago, drawing on the music, dance and ritual of Africa, set against a colourful landscape that is vast, beautiful and powerful. The production will open in Cape Town before transferring to Stratford-upon-Avon in February 2009.
'I'm extremely pleased to be working with Janice Honeyman again - she directed me in the RSC production of Fugard's Hello and Goodbye. It's also been a lifelong ambition of mine to be onstage with the legendary south African actor John Kani. So this feels like all my dreams coming true.'
