History ensemble member Nick Asbury on the History Family's birthday...

Happy birthday!
Today, Wednesday 27th February, is our Birthday. We are two. And that is big cause for celebration. WAHEY!!!!!! None of us have ever been in this situation before. We are in unchartered territory.

Birthday candlesIt seems it has passed in a flash, but so much has happened, so much to tell; and to feel; and remember; and rejoice; that it feels like a little lifetime. Indeed, talking of little lifetimes, Forbes brought in his beautiful ten-month old daughter this morning and she wasn't even a twinkle in her father's eye when we started this job. Some of us have lost parents, some of us have got married. Others have fallen in love. Others have fallen out of love. It's all here.

And we are STILL bloody rehearsing. Sigh. After two days off, following one of the hardest weeks in this whole two years, we are in understudy technical rehearsals for Henry VI Part III. Tonight we do Richard II for the first time in nearly a month. We do two shows tomorrow, then understudy techs for Richard III all day Friday; a performance of Henry V in the evening, then a nice little Trilogy Day on Saturday. And a wee Dickie Three on Sunday. Nuts. Absolutely nuts. But, what a laugh! Time, as I've said before about this crazy job, is a relative concept. Two years. Blimey.

Talking of laughs, not content with putting in 12 hour days for the last month or whatever it is we staged a special fund-raising Histories Cabaret on Sunday evening, which went wonderfully. All the acts came from the Histories Family and were fantastic, and a big thank you to everyone who not only took part but came and paid and helped raise so much money for Hannah's mother who has Multiple Sclerosis. We can now start work on lowering her kitchen so she can make a cup of tea in the morning and cook and wash up. It is fantastic news. And news to which I shed a tear when, next day, Hannah told her Mam how much we'd raised and heard the reaction. You all made a difference. Thank you.

Which is another cause for celebration today as well as our birthday! Again, we must all be looking forward and striving to be better and all the things that form part of our practice, and never rest on our laurels, but we can give ourselves a mighty pat on the back too. Worth a couple or three in The Duck at least...
