History ensemble member Nick Asbury on strange things in the bath...
Strange things in the bath I was sitting in the bath this morning when I noticed something strange.
This, sadly, is not a regular occurrence. I even mentioned it to Lex Shrapnel during the show this afternoon and he looked at me askance and said quietly that he had it too. Yes, dear reader, you guessed it. We have the beginnings of calluses on our knees. I've just asked one of the French and they have'em on their hands. Sigh.
Now an STD - Strenuous Theatrical Disorder - is not too much to worry about, but really, we all spend so much time crawling around on our hands and knees under the stage in Henry V that we're actually beginning to grow things. I can't believe it! Couple that with an unfortunate tear in my trousers this afternoon and I had a cracking show. I first ripped them as I went down the small trap backstage that is the access to substage. Now, I had no time to go to wardrobe flapping so I went on and did the 'once more...' scene. Then there was the creep out of the traps (more crawling) and on to the scene where Pistol pleads for Fluellen to save Bardolph's life. During the scene we react lots of times to the bangs and explosions of the battle by ducking under the stage. Each time I ducked, so the tear in my trousers increased. By the time the scene ended I was faintly surprised that they were on at all. It was mighty windy and I knew it wasn't me. Still, wardrobe had a good go at them in the interval and all was mended by the second half.
But I shall have to report, next time I have a bath (which I've just realised is probably the only time I ever look at my knees - why would you otherwise? Answers on a postcard please), on what is up. Sorry, I'm being coarse again. Bit like my knees.
