History ensemble member Nick Asbury on a love/hate relationship with leeks.

Slinging a leek
Leeks. And more leeks. Raw leeks.

LeeksIt's Friday late afternoon and I've spent all day rehearsing and most of the afternoon getting a raw leek shoved down my gob by Jon Slinger. Not a job for the inexperienced. I'm exhausted and I've to be in tomorrow and rehearse all morning. Jeez.

I suppose that I will eat more leeks now in rehearsal than when we're actually doing the show, but I can tell you already that my attitude is shifting towards the things. Cheesy leeks are not going to be top of my menu for quite some time I fear.

The rest of the show is coming on apace. I think it's shaping up nicely. We suddenly realised a couple of days ago that the initial period of rehearsal that we always do which consists of minutely going through the text and discussing so that we're all beginning to sing from the same hymn sheet, so to speak, was over and everything was on it's feet - in whatever shaky form - for was over for the last time in this great project. Strange to think that we won't be going back and starting a play. However I think we've got quite enough to be looking forward to. The staging of Henry V. The re-staging of Richard II, Henry IV I & II. Then the re-staging of the Henry VIs and Richard III. Plus all the understudy work for each play. Then the mounting in London of them all.

Yes, we've enough to keep us busy. And all the while, if today is anything to go by, I shall smell faintly of raw leek. What an exciting prospect!
