The art of learning lines
Deep and dark into rehearsals for Henry V.

Picture:mopMonday morning fresh from a weekend of slavish devotion to line learning. Honest. Well, a few lines followed by the hoovering. Followed by cleaning the kitchen floor recounting the lines. Followed by a few more lines and the windows are now sparkling. This line learning thing is very good for boring chores as it allows me to go through them whilst not getting distracted elsewhere. That is, of course, until the call of the wild hits and I bolt for a bottle of wine. Nothing seems to stay in the head much after that. Believe me, I've tried.

Then you come into rehearsals on a Monday morning confident you've done your homework, you open your mouth and you speak drivel. It's really quite astonishing. You make passable impersonations of a drowning man, all hope is lost, and any stock you had with the director is as worthwhile as Northern Rock...Other than that, I think it's all going very well.
