Jeanie O'Hare to leave the RSC
Company Dramaturg crosses the Atlantic to nurture playwrights of the future at Yale.
Jeanie joined the RSC in 2005, championing new writers and ensuring that new work has found a natural place on our main stages and in our repertoire.
During her time at the RSC she has been responsible for commissioning 75 new writers for more than 40 world premieres.
Artistic Director Michael Boyd said:
'Jeanie has woven writers and artists into the fabric of the RSC, guided them, challenged them, and made both the new and the established artist feel at home. Her role as Dramaturg has shaped work from William Shakespeare to David Greig with deep insight and great instincts. It was brave to commission Dennis Kelly and Tim Minchin to write the book and songs for Matilda, and it was utterly inspired. I am delighted that our 2012 Winter Season will see four of Jeanie's commissions reach the stage: Tamsin Oglesby's adaption of Russell Hoban's The Mouse and His Child in the RST, James Fenton's version of The Orphan of Zhao, Adrian Mitchell's adaptation of Pushkin's Boris Godunov and Mark Ravenhill's translation of Brecht's Galileo, in the Swan Theatre.'
As well as developing new work in the UK, she has developed the RSC's international presence, forging relationships with LAByrinth Theater Company and writers from across the world, especially America and Russia.
Jeanie leaves the RSC to take up a role shaping a new generation of playwrights, as Chair of the Department of Playwriting at Yale School of Drama.
