AC Grayling meets the cast of Candide

The philosopher AC Grayling is in Stratford-upon-Avon today (Friday) to talk to the cast of Candide about Voltaire.

Our production of Candide is a new play by our Writer in Residence, Mark Ravenhill, responding to Voltaire's novel.

Grayling is meeting the cast to talk to them about Voltaire's short novel, first published in 1759.

He will explain that although Candide is a satire on optimism, that doesn't mean that Voltaire himself was a pessimist and convinced that the cause of humanity was hopeless.

Mark Ravenhill's Candide plays in the Swan Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon from 29 August to 26 October.
