'Intimate, epic, overflowing with feeling and musical intelligence.'
'Once in a blue moon type of every now and again, you hear music that is so complete, so wonderful, unique and yet familiar that it stops you in your tracks. They have that blue moon magic about them, and they have it in spades.'
Mercury award nominees The Unthanks, one of England's most innovative and adventurous folk bands, will be performing the music for the Tyneside Cinema commissioned film Songs from the Shipyards at two live screenings of the piece at The Courtyard Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon on Sunday 28 October 2012.
Songs from the Shipyards, a 60 minute film pieced together from archive footage by internationally acclaimed filmmaker Richard Fenwick, illustrates the highs and lows of Britain's industrial heritage. Focusing on the rise and fall of the shipbuilding industry, this beautiful and moving film documents its impact on the lives of so many people in the 20th century. While the footage focuses on the North East yards of the Tyne, Wear and Tees rivers, there is also film footage from the UK's other major shipyards.
Fenwick and The Unthanks collaborated on the film from the start, producing an evocative score which combines the folk songbook of the shipyard industry with new compositions and compelling arrangements. The end result of this creative partnership is a unique, powerful, live audio-visual event.
The Unthanks' appearance at The Courtyard Theatre forms parts of a nationwide tour of Songs from the Shipyards, which takes in towns and cities with historical links to shipbuilding as well as places like Stratford-upon-Avon where the river was the life blood of the community for many years. The tour also marks the release for The Unthanks of the music from the film: Diversions Vol. 3 - Songs from the Shipyards.
The Live at The RSC programme has already seen singers KT Tunstall, Teddy Thompson and Neil Hannon, comedians Chris Addison and Russell Kane, and poet Benjamin Zephaniah playing at the RSC's theatres in Stratford-upon-Avon. Greg Davies, best-known as the psychotic Head of Sixth Form, Mr Gilbert in Channel 4's The Inbetweeners and star of BBC3's new sitcom Cuckoo, brings his stand up show to the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in December 2012.
Songs from the Shipyards takes place at The Courtyard Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon on Sunday 28 October 2012. There are two performances at 6pm and 8.30pm. Tickets cost £14.50 and can be booked by calling Box Office on 0844 800 1110 or online.
