John Woolf and Friends
Royal Shakespeare Company's Head of Music created a CD of memories with a compilation of past production scores.
RSC Head of Music John Woolf has compiled just some of the many musical scores and songs specially produced by him, his musicians and other composers for RSC productions over the last twenty years on a CD - John Woolf & Friends.
The collection of twenty five tracks includes the haunting Shaun Davey composition for the awakening of Hermione's statue in Adrian Noble's production of The Winter's Tale in 1992, to John Woolf's own composition for Michael Boyd's The Histories (2006-2008) and four songs from Boyd's recent production of As You Like It, some sung by the actor Forbes Masson in the role of Jacques. Other actors included in the recordings are Richard Cordery, Joe Dixon, Aidan McArdle, Jonjo O'Neill and Katy Stephens.
John read music at St John's College Cambridge and has been RSC Head of Music since 2003. He has worked on numerous productions across the whole spectrum of Shakespeare's plays as well as musical theatre (including The Beggar's Opera and The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe amongst others) and new work. He has worked extensively as a composer/arranger for the RSC and elsewhere – his most fruitful collaboration being with RSC Artistic Director Michael Boyd, with whom he has been involved in over twenty productions.
RSC Artistic Director Michael Boyd said: 'Live music has played a central and vivid role in the work of the RSC since its foundation, but never more so than during John Woolf's time as Head of Music. His contribution to our productions as a composer/collaborator has been immense. The spotlight which this collection will shine on his extraordinary gifts as a songwriter is long overdue.'
John said: 'I have been so fortunate to work at Stratford for the RSC and I have been privileged to have worked with some of the best actors, directors, composers and musicians of our generation. This CD presents a taste of the music which I have been a part of in recent years, and I hope that this recording will bring back fond memories of visits to the RSC.'
