Mistrust and resentment thrive in the Venice of Shakespeare's dark comedy. Whilst the inhabitants compete for marriage, wealth and status, a Jewish moneylender is intent on deadly revenge.
Angus Wright returns to the RSC to play Shylock having last appeared with the company in the 1999 production of Stephen Poliakoff’s Talk of the City. Since then he has been in many productions with the National Theatre including War Horse, Saint Joan, The Seagull, Measure for Measure and Stuff Happens. Amara Karan who has just appeared in the films St Trinian’s and The Darjeeling Limited makes her first appearance with the RSC to play the role of Jessica.
Tim Carroll directs his first production for the RSC. As an Associate Director of Shakespeare's Globe, Tim directed Richard II, Romeo and Juliet, The Tempest and Twelfth Night which won Evening Standard, Olivier, Time Out and Critic's Circle Awards. He has also directed for English Touring Opera, Opera Holland Park and Kent Opera.
The Merchant of Venice runs in repertoire at the Theatre Royal, Newcastle from 7 - 25 October 2008.
